Galena LitFest: Abnormal Psychology in Fiction Writers Workshop
Thursday, March 28 @ 5:30 PM
Online
In this last event of Galena LitFest’s Mystery March, author and educator Steven J. Kolbe will present a writers workshop featuring techniques for writing abnormal psychology in fiction, particularly mystery and suspense. If television and movies have taught us anything it’s that people with mental illnesses are violent (Psycho), are somehow driven mad by their genius (A Beautiful Mind), and often receive near-magical abilities from their illness (Homeland). Literary portrayals aren’t much better. Treatment is frequently described either as ineffective (at best) or as blood-chilling manipulation by a malevolent doctor or nurse (at worst). Mental imbalance as a plot device is even more pervasive and tends to highlight extreme experiences for the sake of conflict, drama, and otherness. As a writer with bipolar who writes about characters with mental health struggles, Kolbe will detail some effective strategies that writers can use to accurately portray characters with mental health diagnoses—and why this matters. Registrants will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance, which will then be incorporated into the program. If time allows, questions will also be taken live from audience members. Galena LitFest is an annual literary festival in Galena, IL that began in 2015. Each year, they host a variety of authors, writers workshop instructors, and poets. Celebrate their 10th year with events this February through May. The festival is organized by the Galena Public Library with support from the Friends of GPL. 815-777-0200. GalenaLibrary.org.

Dubuque County Reads 2024: The Personal Librarian
Monday, April 1 @ 5 PM
James Kennedy Public Library (Dyersville, IA)
The remarkable, little-known story of Belle da Costa Greene, J. P. Morgan’s personal librarian-who became one of the most powerful women in New York despite the dangerous secret she kept in order to make her dreams come true, from New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict and acclaimed author Victoria Christopher Murray. In her 20s, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. Pierpont Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection. But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white-her complexion is dark because she is African American. The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths she must go-for the protection of her family and her legacy-to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives. Copies of The Personal Librarian are available to borrow from participating libraries or available for purchase at River Lights Bookstore. libguides.dbq.edu/dubuquecountyreads.

Over the next 15 years, this young boy endured physical and emotional abuse from both of his parents, finding himself “between a rock and a hard place” for over a decade of his life. Despite the evil inflicted upon him, this story shows the power of the human spirit and the will to survive, no matter the circumstances. This book also shows the power of God’s purpose for each life He created and affirms that your condition does not have to be your conclusion. RSVP by April 5. Dubuque County Reads 2024: The Personal Librarian
Monday, April 8 @ 11 AM
University of Dubuque Library

The Neverly Brothers Rock n’ Roll Tribute
Saturday, April 20 @ 7 PM
Ohnward Fine Arts Center (Maquoketa, IA)

Take a guided musical virtual tour of the birth, near death, and resurrection of rock n’ roll—from 1955 to 1965—with The Neverly Brothers. The first half of their concert pays tribute to the music created by the 1950s American Rock n’ Roll pioneers—which by 1960 had become a distant memory but became the inspiration for the next wave of young rock bands from Britain. The second half then pays tribute to the 1964 British Invasion bands that re-recorded the forgotten 1950s American rock music—along with lesser known early 1960s rhythm & blues songs. They pulled rock n’ roll from the edge of extinction by re-inventing and re-energizing it for a new generation. The Neverly Brothers’ repertoire includes spirited performances of classics like “Great Balls of Fire,” “Satisfaction,” “Love Potion #9,” and many more. It’s not “moldy oldies”—it’s “old-school cool!” Learn rock history and be thoroughly entertained with their chronological song sequence, stories behind the music and vintage wardrobe changes. $25 ADV/$28 door adults; $15 ADV/$18 door ages 18 and younger. 1215 E. Platt St, Maquoketa, IA. 563-652-9815. ohnwardfineartscenter.com.

Shrek the Musical JR. Auditions
Thursday, June 27 @ 10 AM–1 PM
Ohnward Fine Arts Center (Maquoketa, IA)

Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family. Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task—if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way. With abundant opportunities for imaginative sets and costumes and a host of over-the-top roles for an expandable cast, there’s a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story. 1215 E Platt St, Maquoketa, IA. 563-652-9815.
