A.Y. McDonald Park
Dubuque Oktoberfest and Bier Tasting is scheduled to return to A.Y. McDonald Park on Saturday, September 16, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for its 9th annual event.
At 11 a.m. the Dubuque Oktoberfest gates open for music, food, beverages, entertainment and games. “In our 9th year, Dubuque Oktoberfest and Bier Tasting has become a staple in the Dubuque festival scene. It’s a wonderful mix of great food and beverages with music, games and entertainment. We welcome you to bring the whole family down,” said Terry Mozena, organizing committee leader.
The traditional games of Hammerschlagen and Masskrugstemmen (a.k.a. the stein holding contest) will be held as usual, in addition to Tug of War and Bier Pong. This year will be the first year for the Düber Bier Mile Run/Walk at 2:30 p.m., drink a bier, run a ¼ mile, drink a bier, run ¼ mile, you get the idea. And then, of course, the return of wiener dog races at 3 p.m.
Throughout the day, music will be provided by the Guttenberg German Band, Americana Band and the Loras College German Band. The University of Northern Iowa, International Dance Theatre will also be performing traditional German and Slavic Dances.
“We purposely choose the 3rd Saturday in September as this is when Oktoberfest starts in Munich, Germany. We try to make our event as authentic as possible, and you get that feeling with Dubuque Oktoberfest and Bier Tasting being under the largest festival tent in the tri-states,” staed Mozena.
Ticket prices are only $5 for adults and free for children 10 and under. All proceeds stay locally, benefiting Camp Albrecht Acres in Sherrill, Iowa, which is a year-round facility dedicated to counseling, supporting and entertaining special needs children, adults and their families.
For the beer lovers, Oktoberfest also offers a special Bier Tasting event from 3 – 6 p.m., where attendees can sample over 25 breweries offering samples of their beverages. Attendance is limited to 600 people, and a special ticket purchase of $25 in advance or $30 at the door is required for the Bier Tasting.
All festivities, including Bier Tasting, are held rain or shine with Dubuque Oktoberfest being held under the largest tent in the tristate area. So families and friends can plan in advance to attend worry-free from weather woes.
Dubuque Oktoberfest attributes its success to the hundreds of hardworking volunteers and generous sponsors, which includes major sponsors Bender Foods, Gronen Restoration, McGrath Volkswagen of Dubuque, Premier Bank, Sedgwick CMS, and Weber Paper Co.
Tickets to Oktoberfest may be purchased at the gate or in advance at all Premier Bank locations. Bier Tasting tickets may be purchased in advance online at www.dbqoktoberfest.org for $25 or at the event for $30.
