Dubuque Ink & Art Expo
Grand River Center (500 Bell St)
The Dubuque Ink and Art Expo was established with the goal of opening the Tri-State community to modern tattooing and its close relation to fine art. This year will be the 5th annual expo, Sept. 22–24, being held at the Grand River Center in the Port of Dubuque.
Tattoo artists, both local and from farther away, will be set up to tattoo for the entire weekend. If you want to get tattooed at the expo, appointments are preferred, but some artists will accept walk-ins. You can contact the artists to set up appointments at DBQInkAndArtExpo.com (click on the “Exhibitors” tab). Body piercing will also be available.
Tattoo contests will allow people to show off their best work. The contests are open to anyone, and there are different categories for color, black/gray, traditional, and photo realism. For those who want something not quite so permanent, Hilaree’s Henna will be offering henna tattoos at the expo the entire weekend. There is also an art gallery with some pieces available for purchase. Get creative at one of the art-activity tables or play the giant Jenga!
7 Sins Sideshow will be returning this year, ready to dazzle the crowd with classic sideshow entertainment. The shows on Friday and Saturday will include PG-13 burlesque, and Saturday/Sunday will feature human suspension.
Stop by Saturday for the pinup contest and cheer on the next “Miss Dubuque Ink and Art” or check out the guys in the beard and mustache contest. Applications and more information about the contests can be found at facebook.com/dubuqueinkandartexpo.
The Body Slam (body painting contest) lets artists showcase their incredible creativity by doing full body painting of live models at the show. Three to six teams will be competing in a timed-session for cash prizes. Body Slam judging will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday. There is also the Live Art Competition on Saturday. A subject is provided, and six artists create their masterpieces: three in realism/representational style and three in abstract/creative interpretation. Cash prize for the winner of each category!
The Lift, 180 Main St. in Dubuque will be hosting the after parties on Friday and Saturday night. More artists, activities, and events are being added as the expo gets closer, so be sure to check out DBQInkAndArtExpo.com for updates. You can also check out the expo’s Facebook page and Instagram for more information and pictures.
