Wednesday, May 1 @ 6:45–8 PM
Shalom Spirituality Center

Enjoy the 2018 film St. Francis of Assisi – Sign of Contradiction. He turned his back on everything that the world said would lead to happiness in favor of something else, something more. When his radical journey led him to encounter Christ, the darkness and confusion in his life were replaced with light and peace. While the world saw him as a fool, he was a sign of contradiction. Ultimately, this film is about conversion, his and ours. Includes popcorn. Facilitated by Ginny Heldorfer OSF. RSVP by April 30. Free. 1001 Davis St. 563-582-3592. shalomretreats.org.

Now grown into a young very bright, strong-willed child without any formal education or form of communication, Helen is a frustrated mystery to her exhausted family. Her heartbroken mother Kate is Helen’s best protector, but her father Captain Arthur Keller has despaired of any possible resolution and her half-brothers, James and William, feel that an institution is the best option. Kate insists on sending for a governess from the prestigious Perkins Institute for the Blind. Annie Sullivan, a lively and stubborn Yankee girl, barely out of school herself, with the experience of childhood blindness—cured, after numerous operations—arrives to help with Helen. Driven by the demons of her traumatic past, Annie fight to reach Helen and bring light to the darkness of her mind. But faced with the well-meaning pity of the Kellers (with their own familial conflict) and the fearful, furious trickery of Helen herself, it will take all of Annie’s patience, creativity, and firmness of spirit to guide Helen into a world of understanding. First Fridays: Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective
Friday, May 3 @ 5–9 PM
Voices Studios

Voices Studios is proud to announce an exhibition of paintings by local artists John Bissell and Roy Haught, titled Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective. The artists will be present for the opening reception. Outside of regular event hours, the gallery will be open by appointment as requested. Artists John Bissell and Roy Haught are revered figures in the local art scene, each having cultivated their signature style of painting through the span of 60 years. Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective will seek to contrast two unique visions of a local place, Eastern Iowa. Roy Haught, known for his evocative pastoral paintings, draws inspiration from the rich textures and landscapes of Eastern Iowa. Haught’s compositions transport the viewer to the essence of the natural environment. According to Haught, a painting is successful when it exists as a letter of gratitude to nature. Haught received his MA from the University of Notre Dame and Chaired the Art Department at Loras for many years before his retirement. John Bissell’s paintings take the viewer on a nostalgic journey through time with his depictions of Dubuque in the 19th and 20th century. Bissell’s expertly crafted watercolors serve as a window into a bygone era. A full-time artist for many years, Bissell has exhibited in both galleries and museums within the region. Bissell studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and then acquired a Master’s Degree in art from the University of Iowa. The juxtaposition of these two artist’s perspectives creates a rich visual feast of contrasting artistic styles and visions. On display May 3–31. First Fridays is Downtown Dubuque’s monthly art series, celebrating Dubuque’s great visual arts scene. Visit all of the locations and celebrate our creative community. Free. 1585 Central Ave. 563-590-2533. voicesstudios.org.
