Neil Hilborn Performance Poet Reading & Workshop
Monday, April 22 @ 6–7 PM
River Lights Bookstore
To celebrate National Poetry Month, best-selling author and award-winning slam poet Neil Hilborn will perform at River Lights Bookstore. Spoken word poetry is a broad designation for a style of poetry intended to be performed, drawing on oral traditions and music. Spoken-word performance art mainly involves a poetic text meant for reading out loud as a performance. Following his performance, Neil will share his thoughts on what performance poetry is and how to express poetry as performance art. Neil is a master of this art. If you are a spoken-word performance artist or poet, please come prepared to share your work. Following Neil’s event, River Lights will open the floor to the spoken word. With more than 150 million views to his credit, he is the most-watched poet ever. He has performed in 41 states and 8 countries, and in 2019 alone he drove coast to coast five times while on tour. Neil is noted for his signature wry examinations of mental health. His poems, The Future and OCD went viral. In addition to touring and writing Neil hosts an online writing circle with elements of craft and performance. He and his wife live in Chapel Hill, NC, where, as Neil confesses they adopt too many animals. Free. 1098 Main St. 563-556-4391. RiverLights.com.

General Casting School of Rock Adults and The Addams Family All Ages Auditions
Monday, April 22 @ 7 PM
Grand Opera House Rehearsal Space

The Grand Opera House and Rising Star Theatre Company are hosting auditions for two upcoming performances at The Grand Opera House. Based on the hit movie of the same name, School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight–A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school’s headmistress finding out? School of Rock, with its sensational live kids’ rock band, is a loving testimony to the transforming power of music. The Addams Family is a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, featuring an original story that is every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. School of Rock is open to youth and adult actors ages 10 and above. The Addams Family is open to adult actors, currently in high school and above, as well as one youth actor, currently in middle or high school.  Those performers interested in auditioning for both productions will only need to complete one audition. 880 Locust St, Suites 222 and 228. thegrandoperahouse.com/auditions.
