A Taste of the Dances of Universal Peace
Thursday, April 24 @ 7–8:30 PM
Shalom Spirituality Center

“Spiritual Folk Dance,” “Moving Meditation,” and Embodied Prayer” are all ways to describe the Dances of Universal Peace. A form of peace through the arts, the dances are experiential in nature. Old hands and new arrivals form the circle, with no previous dancing experience necessary. This evening will be geared towards new participants. The dances unfold in an atmosphere of unity and connectedness, as we use sacred phrases, music, and simple movements inspired by many spiritual traditions. This combination helps us connect with the source of all, touch the divine essence in ourselves, and honor it in others in a unique way. The dances are not about performance, but rather transformance. Each dancer is invited to have their own experience. Shalom likes to say, “Spiritual growth is an individual activity best done in groups.” Facilitated by Morgan Rivers and other Dance Leaders. Morgan has led a monthly circle in Des Moines since 2004 and has helped sponsor multiple retreats with visiting dance leaders. Freewill donation. RSVP by 4/23. 1001 Davis St. 563-582-3592. shalomretreats.org.

Clarke Religion & Science Lecture: Dr. Kimberly Rios
Thursday, April 24 @ 7:30 PM
Clarke University Alumnae Lecture Hall

As part of the international Religion and Science Weekend movement, Clarke is proud to welcome Dr. Kimberly Rios to campus. Rios will present a social psychology perspective on issues related to religious diversity in science. According to Rios, although approximately 90 percent of Americans report believing in God, only 25 percent of university science professors self-identify as religious. In her work, Rios examines the perceived incompatibility of science and religion and how this perception impacts Christians’ trust, performance, and representation in science. Promoting a deeper understanding of the relationship between religion and science has long been the goal of the lecture series, according to Assistant Professor of Psychology Richard Grove. “At Clarke University, we invite students to learn about religion, faith, and spirituality. Many of our students are also studying in STEM fields. The Religion and Science lectures give us the opportunity to provide our community with different theological, philosophical, and scientific perspectives on the relationship between religion and science,” Dr. Grove said. “Dr. Rios will provide a unique perspective on this topic. She is a social psychologist who specializes in researching religious and scientific identities. Her research can provide insight into how perceptions of conflict between science and religion can shape our identities and impact issues of religious diversity within science.” Dr. Rios is Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with research focused on intergroup relations and identity, including religious identity. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of Self and Identity, and Associate Editor of the International Journal for the Psychology of Religion and Group Processes and Intergroup Relations. In acknowledgement of her efforts, Rios was named the 2019 International Society for Self and Identity Early Career Award and the 2024 Society for Experimental Social Psychology Diversity Science Award. She is also President-Elect of the Midwestern Psychological Association for the 2026-2027 term. Promoting a deeper understanding of the relationship between religion and science has long been the goal of the lecture series, according to Assistant Professor of Psychology Richard Grove. Saturday, May 3 @ 8–11 AM
Heritage Trail Heritage Pond

Honor, celebrate, and remember the life of former Dubuque Police Chief Mark Dalsing and keeping his goal alive of making Dubuque the best it could be with a 5K fun-run/walk. Mark Dalsing served the City of Dubuque, IA as both a police officer and Chief of Police before his retirement in September 2021. From there he joined the Affordable Housing Department at Catholic Charities until his unexpected death in April 2022. Mark was know for lighting up rooms, being a jokester, a shoulder to lean on, and the best husband, father, family member ,and friend anyone could wish for. Outside of his 20-plus years of service on the police department, Mark loved participating in 5K running events throughout the Tri-State area. Although, self-admittedly, he wasn’t the fastest runner, he ran for joy. Crossing the finish line and getting a T-shirt were the two best things about running to him, regardless of what the clock said. The musical is set to open on Broadway in the 2025-2026 season. Berg is also working as the composer for the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of My Cousin Vinny, based on the iconic movie. Dubuque Shakespeare Project: Henry V
Sunday, May 11 @ 2–3:30 PM
Carnegie-Stout Public Library

Shakespeare’s work is alive and well, and his work continues to illuminate and inform who we are. The Dubuque Shakespeare Project acts as a focal point for celebrating the Bard’s work in the Tri-State area. Carnegie-Stout Public Library launches a monthly series in which participants will examine Shakespeare’s work in somewhat chronological order. The series will highlight common themes across plays and narrative poems and will chart the writer’s growth as a dramatist. As a starting point, each month’s discussion will place the work in the contexts of Shakespeare’s canon and the play’s relevance to our current human condition. Shakespeare first gained notice with his early histories chronicling the Wars of the Roses. When he started work on the prequels that lay the historical basis for the Wars of the Roses ending in the short triumphant reign of Henry V, Shakespeare’s interests and talents had grown too big for any one genre. Though nominally histories, Shakespeare questions everything from the monarchy itself and delves deep into the qualities that seem to define a successful leader. These plays gain additional resonance when we consider that they were written in the last decade of Elizabeth’s reign when questions of succession, transfer and wielding of power and stability were all at the forefront of their thinking. 360 W 11th St. shakespeare.carnegiestout.org.

Cable Car Square

Join the Bluff Street Neighborhood Association for a spring afternoon of dance performances and audience-participation demos for the whole family. Social Dancing in Dubuque has a rich history. The program includes a professional couple dance show by Adam’s Dance Connection, descending from the Fenelon Elevator; a Brazilian Capoeira street roda/gathering; kids performances and demos of hhip Hop, African-style, and majorette by Turnt Kidz; Argentine tango with lessons and other social dances; and wine tasting, food trucks, and vendors. The Bluff Street Neighborhood Association is a non-profit organization that holds seasonal events to help grow community awareness, promote neighborhood comradery and preserve Dubuque’s artistic and cultural traditions.

Historic District Coffee House Open Mic
Saturdays: May 17, September 20, November 15 @ 7 PM
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Dubuque
It’s an open mic event, featuring mostly music, but also storytelling and poetry. Performers are a mixture of professionals and amateurs. In the style of the folk music coffee house culture of the 1960s, much of the music is traditional or Americana music, but they have occasional Dixieland, classical piano, and other surprises. Performers can sign up in advance for a slot on the schedule, but many just show up and put their name on the board. There are regular performers and regular guests, but also many new faces every time. A list of recent performers included the Prairie Lights String Band (Bruce Schmidt, Alyssa Zasada and Paul Schumacher), Dave Overby’s recorder quintet, Chris Ross with singalongs, and Ireland’s favorite daughter “Colleen” with stories from the Auld Sod. Genial co-hosts Art Roche (topical folk songs) and Karen Buechele (singer-songwriter) keep the show moving along at a happy pace. It’s a coffee house, so of course there’s coffee and tea and lots of snacks and desserts, all compliments of the Coffee House hospitality team. The cozy, intimate environment of the Historic District Coffee House has been one of Dubuque’s best-kept secrets for 13 years, but now the secret is out! Free. 1699 Iowa St. 563-581-6521. uudbq.org/connection/coffeehouse.

Uncle Kracker cuts right to the chase. He knows people want to kick back, forget about their troubles, and have a good time, so he’s always willing to oblige. For over two decades, the multi-platinum artist (born Matthew Shafer) has consistently soundtracked such good times with his boldly breezy blend of country, pop and rock spiked with a splash of hip-hop. The world initially met Uncle Kracker during his stint in Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker Band, lending his songwriting and musical acumen to seven cuts off the RIAA diamond-certified Devil Without A Cause. However, fans fell in love with him on his solo debut Double Wide in 2000. It not only crashed the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 at No. 7, but it also picked up a double-platinum certification and paved the way for the gold-certified follow-up No Stranger To Shame (2002). He has impressively notched No. 1 entries in three different genre lanes, topping Pop, Adult Contemporary, and Country charts. The platinum “Follow Me” clinched No. 1 in four countries, while the double-platinum “When The Sun Goes Down” (with Kenny Chesney) vaulted to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks Chart. He made history with his cover of Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away.” It logged 28 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Adult Contemporary Radio, earning “the most weeks atop any Billboard chart.” Meanwhile, “Smile” shined across culture. It reached triple-platinum status and landed dozens of syncs, including a spot for The Office and a tribute montage to Regis Philbin on his final episode of Live With Regis & Kelly. Following 2012’s country album Midnight Special, he served up singles such as “Endlessly,” “Floatin’,” and “No Time To Be Sober.” Right on cue, Uncle Kracker continues to create new music with a brand-new album Coffee & Beer out now, featuring singles “Beach Chair,” “Reason To Drink,” and “Sweet 16.” The 2025 Back Waters Stage Summer Concert Series is presented by MidWestOne Bank, fueled by Kwik Stop, and sponsored by Verlo Mattress, Turpin Dodge, Conlon Construction and Giese. Gates at 6 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m. Rain or shine. All ages. GA: $55; Turpin Tailgate: $75. 1855 Greyhound Park Rd. 563-582-3647. BackWatersStage.com.

Historic District Coffee House Open Mic
Saturdays: September 20, November 15 @ 7 PM
Readings Under the Influence
Tuesday, October 29 @ 7 PM
Smokestack

RUI is a themed, interactive live and local arts showcase. As far as giving you an understanding of how it all goes and what to expect, well, it’s different every time. Sometimes it’s edgy, sometimes sweet, sometimes controversial, sometimes downright vicious, but always artful. RUI also loves audience participation, and they love giving away their infamous “Burden Prizes,” so prepare for nerdy, wordy trivia outbursts between readings as well as a shots-infused, volunteerish interactive audience participation game. Feeling chill and inspired? Sit a while in the Writer’s/Artist’s Corner, wherein you may dump those inspired musings onto paper. Doors at 6:30 p.m. Free. 62 E 7th St. facebook.com/RUIDBQ.

Historic District Coffee House Open Mic
Saturday, November 15 @ 7 PM
