Riley Downing
Monday, April 29 @ 7 PM
The Lift
You may know Riley Downing from his work with acclaimed New Orleans combo the Deslondes, or perhaps from his similarly rootsy and wide-ranging catalog of songs with the Tumbleweeds—indeed, the Missouri-based singer-songwriter’s ability to set gripping, evocative narratives within soundscapes that weave together country, blues, folk, R&B, bluegrass, rock, soul, and whatever else catches his ear is something that, once you hear it, is hard to shake free from. Same goes for that voice—deep, dusty, and drawling, it’s an instrument that can stop you in your tracks with its character and expressiveness, as well as through Downing’s knack for laying out complex emotions in plainspoken, direct language. $15 ADV/$20 day of show. 180 Main St, Lower Level. facebook.com/theliftdubuque.

Shalom Spirituality Center

Enjoy the 2018 film St. Francis of Assisi – Sign of Contradiction. He turned his back on everything that the world said would lead to happiness in favor of something else, something more. When his radical journey led him to encounter Christ, the darkness and confusion in his life were replaced with light and peace. While the world saw him as a fool, he was a sign of contradiction. Ultimately, this film is about conversion, his and ours. Includes popcorn. Facilitated by Ginny Heldorfer OSF. RSVP by April 30. Free. 1001 Davis St. 563-582-3592. shalomretreats.org.

First Fridays: Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective
Friday, May 3 @ 5–9 PM
Voices Studios

Voices Studios is proud to announce an exhibition of paintings by local artists John Bissell and Roy Haught, titled Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective. The artists will be present for the opening reception. Outside of regular event hours, the gallery will be open by appointment as requested. Artists John Bissell and Roy Haught are revered figures in the local art scene, each having cultivated their signature style of painting through the span of 60 years. Echoes of Iowa: A Dual Perspective will seek to contrast two unique visions of a local place, Eastern Iowa. Roy Haught, known for his evocative pastoral paintings, draws inspiration from the rich textures and landscapes of Eastern Iowa. Haught’s compositions transport the viewer to the essence of the natural environment. According to Haught, a painting is successful when it exists as a letter of gratitude to nature. Haught received his MA from the University of Notre Dame and Chaired the Art Department at Loras for many years before his retirement. John Bissell’s paintings take the viewer on a nostalgic journey through time with his depictions of Dubuque in the 19th and 20th century. Bissell’s expertly crafted watercolors serve as a window into a bygone era. A full-time artist for many years, Bissell has exhibited in both galleries and museums within the region. Bissell studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and then acquired a Master’s Degree in art from the University of Iowa. The juxtaposition of these two artist’s perspectives creates a rich visual feast of contrasting artistic styles and visions. On display May 3–31. First Fridays is Downtown Dubuque’s monthly art series, celebrating Dubuque’s great visual arts scene. Visit all of the locations and celebrate our creative community. Now grown into a young very bright, strong-willed child without any formal education or form of communication, Helen is a frustrated mystery to her exhausted family. Her heartbroken mother Kate is Helen’s best protector, but her father Captain Arthur Keller has despaired of any possible resolution and her half-brothers, James and William, feel that an institution is the best option. Kate insists on sending for a governess from the prestigious Perkins Institute for the Blind. Annie Sullivan, a lively and stubborn Yankee girl, barely out of school herself, with the experience of childhood blindness—cured, after numerous operations—arrives to help with Helen. Driven by the demons of her traumatic past, Annie fight to reach Helen and bring light to the darkness of her mind. But faced with the well-meaning pity of the Kellers (with their own familial conflict) and the fearful, furious trickery of Helen herself, it will take all of Annie’s patience, creativity, and firmness of spirit to guide Helen into a world of understanding. Universal sorrows, family bonds, and the strength of the human spirit are explored in the amazing true story these remarkable women. Machine Killer Tour featuring Sevendust, Static-X, and DOPE
Friday, May 17 @ 7 PM
Five Flags Arena
Metal legends Sevendust and Static-X bring their Machine Killer Tour to the Five Flags Arena. The Machine Killer Tour is a reunion that is over two decades in the making and goes all the way back to 1999. Sevendust, Static-X, and DOPE were each exploding onto the scene and partnered up to create one of the most memorable tours of that year. Now the metal holy trinity will continue touring together. Co-headlined by Static-X and Sevendust, the tour is named after the Gold certified sophomore album Machine by Static-X and their recently acclaimed Rise Of The Machine tour, along with the chart-topping 14th studio album from Sevendust, Truth Killer. Sevendust never follow a linear path. Instead, they continue to bulldoze a lane of their own with a proven one-two punch of rumbling grooves, unpredictable riffing, and stirringly soulful vocals unlike anything else in hard rock. As a result, their music connects straight to the heart as evidenced by their full-contact live shows and diehard “family” of fans. It’s why they’ve been around since 1994, tallied global sales of seven million, logged three gold-selling albums, delivered three Top 15 debuts on the Billboard 200, and garnered a Grammy Award nomination in the category of “Best Metal Performance.” The Atlanta quintet—Lajon Witherspoon, Clint Lowery, John Connolly, Vince Hornsby, and Morgan Rose—defy expectations yet again on their latest album, Truth Killer. Static-X rose to fame with their 1999 platinum selling debut album Wisconsin Death Trip and went on to release five more albums over the course of the next decade. The band has sold more than 3-million albums in the US alone and has had multiple chart-topping radio singles. On Nov. 1, 2014, founding member Wayne Static unexpectedly passed away. The reformed lineup of original members Tony Campos, Koichi Fukuda, Ken Jay and backed by frontman Xer0 hit the road in 2019 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album and delivered acclaimed performances by fans and critics alike. The revitalized Static-X continue to make headlines with their sold-out touring and new music while keeping their signature Evil Disco sound alive. $35–$65. 405 Main St. 563-589-4254. fiveflagscenter.com.

Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family. Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task—if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn’t be complete without a few twists and turns along the way. With abundant opportunities for imaginative sets and costumes and a host of over-the-top roles for an expandable cast, there’s a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story. 1215 E Platt St, Maquoketa, IA. 563-652-9815.
